Gathering your supplies -
- When you go buy your makeup pallet, try to find
the brand names: Steins or Mehron. These are two trusted brands of real clowns.
Make sure your pallet has the following colors of greasepaint. Clown White,
Black, Red, Blue & a Flesh tone color. These are the basic main colors real
clowns use. We rarely use any other colors, although it is ok to in moderation.
- When you are purchasing your
makeup supplies, also pick up some baby powder, baby wipes, Q-tips & a
makeup brush.
- When you gather your makeup supplies for
application. Find a wash cloth rag for removing makeup & an old sock that
won't be used again, and fill it with baby powder. The Baby Wipes are used for
any mistakes you make, and also used in removing makeup after you're done
clowning around. The Q-Tips are used for shaping the makeup. The makeup brush is
used to dust off excess baby powder. You may want to find small paint brushes to
apply your other colored features.
Makeup
Design.
- There are 3 main types of clowns. White Face,
Auguste & Tramp/Hobo. They all have a different look, but have similar basic
features. The idea is to highlight the eyes, mouth, nose and cheeks. You apply
your makeup from lightest to darkest colors. I'm going to explain how to apply
Auguste Makeup. Each clown has a unique makeup design like a finger print. So it
would not be a good idea if you put on Duffer's face. You'll want to create your
own design.
Clown
White
- Take some clown white makeup on your fingers and
draw a design around your eyes and mouth. make sure the design fits your facial
features. They can be simple or fancy designs. When you are done, you may want
to fix any mistakes with a Q-tip.
- Once that is done, you can take
your powder sock, shake it over your face letting powder fall on the
makeup (close your eyes). Then pat the makeup with the makeup sock. This is an
important step to great looking makeup, it sets (dries) the makeup so you don't
get a greasy looking face. Once you've powdered you'll want to brush off the
extra powder with your makeup brush.
Flesh Base Makeup
- This color isn't totally necessary, but it helps
make your face stand out, and evens out skin tones. Makes for a great looking
clown. Take some of the flesh color makeup on your fingers and apply it on your
face (neck is optional) around the white areas. You'll notice the white pops
out. And then you'll want to repeat the powdering process.
Blush/ Rouge
- You can do one of 2 things, you can use the red
grease paint or ask your mom to help you apply some of her blush to give your
cheeks a rosy glow. You don't have to apply it exactly like Duffer, you'll have
to decide what is the best design for your face.
Facial Features
- You'll want to highlight your facial features
such as your eyebrows and lip.
You can color your lip red or black (they are the
best colors). if you want a different look than Duffer, you can add
dime
size
circles at the corners of your mouth.
This will give you a "permanent
smile" even when you are not smiling.

or any color you wish. You can even just have a light outline around the white
area of your eyes or even curly lines if it fits your face. You can even have
freckles if you wish. All depends on your creativity!
- Live-eye is exactly what your
mom does with eye-liner pencil. It helps bring out your eyes from afar. You can
add small crows feet for a personal touch.
- Finally after all your features
are applied, you'll want to repeat the powdering process one more time to set
the colors.
Nose, Wig & Costume
- Once all makeup is applied and
set, you can then put on your nose, wig if you have one and costume! You may
want to apply double sided tape to your sponge nose so that it will stay on
during your party, but will be easy to take off if necessary.
That's It! You'll be the best
looking Halloween clown around! If
